OT11_PR_eventphotoWalkers set out early yesterday morning after Opening Ceremonies at Carleton University.  After walking approximately 30 kilometres, they arrived back at Carleton where they enjoyed an array of activities and live entertainment, before camping overnight.  Walkers awoke early this morning to continue for another 30 kilometres to the finish line.  Many walked in memory or to support those battling breast or gynecologic cancers.  Closing ceremonies begin at 3:00 PM at Ravens Field at Carleton University.

60 kilometres may seem like a lot, but it’s nothing compared to what all those people affected by cancer are facing,” said Rosalyn Da Costa a 2nd year walker and breast cancer survivor.  “The energy that you feel throughout the Weekend is remarkable.”

Hundreds of volunteers and crew members were on hand to provide support over the course of the two-day event.

To date, a total of $12.8 million has been raised enabling innovative cancer research, reducing wait times, and generally improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families in Eastern Ontario. Formally known as The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, the event has grown to support research and care for all women’s cancers.  With the continued expansion of the Weekend’s mandate, proceeds now also finance new discoveries to better treat gynecologic cancers such as ovarian, cervical, uterine, endometrial, and vaginal – and are helping to provide Cancer Survivorship Care that will be offered at Canada’s first centre for cancer survivorship – the Maplesoft Centre.OT11_PR_eventphoto

About the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation
The Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers benefits the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. The Cancer Foundation is committed to increasing cancer survivorship in Eastern Ontario and is the only local charitable organization dedicated exclusively to raising funds for cancer care in our community. Working to fill the gaps in services for cancer patients, the Cancer Foundation has partnered with local hospitals and organizations to ensure residents have the best possible care close to their homes, shorter wait times, improved quality of life and access to the latest new therapies. Locally, researchers are investigating better ways to treat breast cancer, including targeted treatments that minimize the negative side effects while still effectively combating a patient’s cancer. The Cancer Foundation and its partners are learning more about how to predict and prevent breast cancer and gynecological cancer. Put together, this research is bringing us closer every day to an end to women’s cancers.
